B'nai Harim recognizes the rich variety of Jewish experience and nurtures continuing Jewish learning
Chai Mitzvah Program
Adults who wish to learn to follow along in the service in Hebrew are taught by our talented lay leader, Gene Schneider. Gene’s humor and his commitment to instilling in his students a love of his native language are legendary. Classes meet after services or, less frequently, at a time of mutual convenience.
Adult B’nai Mitzvah
One of the highlights of our history was the celebration of the b'nai mitzvah of 21 Senior Scholars that coincided with the 13th anniversary of B'nai Harim. At our 18th Anniversary Shabbat, 4 more adults stepped up to the Torah to become b’not mitzvah. But you don't have to wait for such an occasion. Adults are encouraged to speak with Gene Schneider or Rabbi Peg if they are interested in learning to read from the Torah.
Shabbat Dinner Programs
Once a month we welcome Shabbat together at B’nai Harim with a potluck dinner preceded by the rituals of candle lighting, Kiddush and motzi and some singing. After dinner there is a brief teaching or program, often tied to an approaching holiday but in no way limited by the calendar. Some popular programs have included chevruta (paired) study of Jewish ethical dilemmas, a songfest based on Pirkei Avot, the Ethics of the Fathers, an Israel trivia quiz and sharing of personal stories.
Topics of general Jewish interest from illuminated manuscripts to Jews in Sports and talks on history and politics are accompanied by a lovely bagels ‘n’ lox breakfast. Someone once quipped that LOX stands for “Lots Of eXperts” because of the varied, talented folks who are invited to speak. The LOX Academy meets several times a year, always on a Sunday morning.
Music on the Mountains
Each summer B’nai Harim brings in entertainers whose specialty is Jewish music. We’ve had heartfelt modern Israeli music, a lively klezmer band and even the Best of Broadway, traditionally a showcase for Jewish composers and themes.
Throughout the year movies of Jewish interest are shown on Saturday night. Lively discussions often follow the showing. Register for the series or come to individual showings. Our calendar and special events pages will carry more information
